- Become proficient in obstetrical and gynecological procedures
Our program strives to recruit and train highly motivated physicians in a diverse, multi-cultural, underserved patient population. We aim to graduate compassionate women’s health experts and advocates. Patient safety and quality Improvement are at the core of our practice, with a focus on diverse obstetrics and gynecological pathologies.
Physicians are prepared for competent practice in general obstetrics and gynecology and are provided exposure to OB/GYN subspecialties for referral in practice, and possible further career development in the subspecialties. The overall goal of the training program in obstetrics and gynecology is to provide an educational program with sufficient experience in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of gynecologic and obstetrical conditions to result in the emergence of physicians with the ability for independent and competent practice as primary physicians of women.
Our four-year program has graduated responsibility for the residents, with each year building on previous experiences, while under the supervision of faculty physicians dedicated to their growth and maturation. The primary goal is to prepare our residents to be the primary care providers and gatekeepers of the general healthcare needs of the female patient, especially during their reproductive years, including their obstetrical and gynecological needs. They are also prepared to be specialists for women transitioning into menopause and are responsible for screening for gynecological cancers.
Attention is paid to the patient’s needs regarding screening of sexually transmitted infections, HIV counseling, nutritional status (supported by an in-house dietician), psychosocial counseling, sex education, contraceptive needs, and immunization status.
Residents learn to counsel patients regarding the risks, benefits, and alternatives of both medical and surgical therapies, to provide pre-operative assessment and post-operative care.
Additionally, residents learn competence in performing surgical interventions, and to ultimately become experts as primary physicians of women’s health.
Wyckoff Heights Medical Center’s Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program provides dedicated educational time for our residents to prepare for the passing of their board examination through participation in conferences, quality improvement projects, quality assurance, and scholarly activities.
