Welcome to the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center Emergency Medicine (WHEM) Residency Program. We are a unique program in a unique city, located on the borders of Brooklyn and Queens. Our residency program provides the combined experience of a community teaching hospital in a high-density urban environment. The Emergency Department serves an ethnically and racially diverse population and treats a wide range of pathologies in various states of exacerbation. The size of our program fosters a familial spirit and encourages strong teamwork. Residents of our program quickly learn resuscitation skills, leadership, and develop their ability to think quickly and independently in a supportive atmosphere. We strive to cultivate physicians who are clinically competent, caring, empathetic, and passionate about lifelong learning.
The Wyckoff Heights Medical Center Emergency Medicine (WHEM) residency program is a three-year ACGME-accredited residency program. Our program is approved for six residents each year for a total of 18 approved resident positions. The primary education site is the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center Emergency Department in Brooklyn. Residents also rotate through Harlem Hospital Center, The Brooklyn Hospital Center, Staten Island University Hospital, and the New York City Poison Control Center. Total months spent in emergency medicine rotations vary each year from 10 months in PGY-1, 6.5 months in PGY-2, and 9 months in PGY-3. During PGY-3, residents are encouraged to explore their specific emergency medicine interest during their scheduled elective rotation.

Located in an ethnically diverse residential neighborhood directly on the border of northern Brooklyn and western Queens, Wyckoff Heights Medical Center is a 324-bed teaching hospital. A dedicated staff of 1,800 physicians, nurses, and support personnel care for patients representing 35 distinct languages and cultures.
Wyckoff Heights Medical Center has been providing medical care to the community since 1889. Today, we see 90,000 visits annually in our Adult & Pediatric Emergency Departments, including the delivery of 2,000 babies. We also offer a range of outpatient services to thousands of individuals through our network of community ambulatory care centers, and we offer extensive community health education and screening programs.
We provide the latest in evidence-based care with the goal of ensuring your satisfaction with the quality of care you receive. WHMC is fully accredited by the Joint Commission and the emergency department is recognized as a 911 receiving facility in addition to recently receiving the American Stroke Association Gold Plus Award for outstanding stroke care. As of March 2021 we are a designated STEMI center recognized by FDNY and provide immediate PCI for patients with life threatening MIs.
Our Emergency Department is composed of three designated care areas and patients are directed to one of these areas by the triage nurse. There are two Adult Care areas and a dedicated and separate Pediatric Emergency care area. The adult areas are separated into the Adult Main and the Adult FastTrack (Urgent Care) where care is provided by specially trained physicians and physician assistants. The Adult Main area provides care to individuals who present with potentially critical conditions or injuries such as chest pain, severe respiratory difficulty, stroke, and pneumonia. Our Adult FastTrack area provides care for non-critical conditions such as back pain, headache, joint injuries and strains.
