Departments / Neurology/Designated Stroke Center

The Department of Neurology is dedicated to providing the highest level of care to patients with neurological diseases. The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) has designated the hospital as a regional Stroke Center.

The department treats patients with the following neurological diseases or conditions:

  • Stroke Cerebral Thrombosis or Hemorrhage
  • Epilepsy or Seizure Disorders
  • Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorder
  • Neuromuscular Diseases

Patients are seen both in consultation in the hospital and in an out-patient setting in our Neurology Center. A dedicated team of neurologists provide specialty services, including advanced EEG for patients with a diagnosis of epilepsy and evaluation of seizure disorders.

In addition, neurologists work closely with related sub-specialists in other fields, such as neurosurgery, rehabilitation medicine and psychiatry, radiology, critical care medicine, and pediatric neurology.

All appropriate neurological testing is provided at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerized Axial Tomography (CT/CAT scan) Carotid Doppler, Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies.

Wyckoff Heights Medical Center is proud to be designated as a Stroke Center in our region by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). This is a result of our adherence to the state’s standards that utilize nationally recognized criteria for quality, facilities requirements, and staffing with specially trained personnel.

According to the NYSDOH and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stroke is the third leading cause of death in the State of New York and in the U.S. as a whole. It is also a leading cause of serious long-term disability.

However, recent advances in the understanding of stroke-induced brain damage indicate that prompt, appropriate medical treatment reduces brain injury and helps patients to recover earlier, with minimal disruption of brain functions.

The other members of the Stroke Team include emergency department physicians, neurologists, neurosurgeons, radiologists, physiatrists, intensive care physicians, registered nurses, a speech therapist, and other technical support staff. Members of this team are always available and work expeditiously to identify the nature of the stroke and to provide the highest quality of care as established by NYSDOH stroke protocol.

Our Stroke Center provides excellent care and appropriate interventions. After discharge, patients are followed by their private doctors in consultation with our Stroke Center neurologists, who work with other specialists in rehabilitation medicine and physiatry, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, and critical care medicine to provide comprehensive care for the patient.
